Kamihimo-weaving with paper strings
Throughout the world Japan is known for its paper culture, which has a long tradition. Among Japanese papers washi is most famous for its enormous robustness and breaking strength. It was used as packing material, for writing and painting since the 16th century AD and had a deep impact on Japanese arts and culture. The inherent delicacy, simplicity and subtlety reflect the Japanese spirit. Kamihimo are long strings made of washi (kami = paper, himo = string), which are woven together. Weaving the water-resistant paper strings enables not only special artistic design but also the making of practical items like baskets, bags, mats, sandals and jewellery. The Football Club Freiburg, Germany, uses goal nets made of Kamihimo, though the material used for the nets is much stronger as for artistic purposes. All Kamihimo is produced according to ecological guidelines and can be broken down biologically with no residues. Children of all ages and adults can work independently with lots of fun. With Kamihimo there are no limits to creativity and many pieces of artwork will be designed. The integration of these innovative products in everyday life can establish a new relationship to environment and help to strengthen extant relationships between mankind and environment. Modernization of society and economy has nearly swept away traditional culture. Mass production and mass consumption changed the relationship to hand-made articles and even self-made articles. Easy consumption is worth mountains of waste. From this background UEDA INDUSTRIAL CO LTD. with senior managing director Takayasu Ueda tries to establish a new philosophy, which successfully combines tradition and modern accents. |
